CALL FOR ENTRY FOR ANA ABUJA FORTNIGHTLY SHORT STORY CONTEST
Do you have a very good short story to tell? Here is an opportunity to win a prize doing so.
*Eligibility and Entry Rules*
Please read these eligibility and entry rules before proceeding to submit your short story for the competition called *ANA Fortnightly Short Story.*
The competition, which runs in two weeks intervals, is a contest of unpublished short stories administered and funded by the Association of Nigerian Authors, Abuja Chapter. The competition will run from March 2024 to February 2025.
A winner shall be announced every other Wednesday morning, in a two weeks period.
The winning short story will be featured on the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Abuja WhatsApp Platform.
The author of the winning short story will receive an award: a certificate of recognition.
All winning short stories will be compiled and published in the forthcoming *ANA Abuja Anthology of Poems and Short Stories.*
*Eligibility*
The contest is open to Nigerian authors in Nigeria and the diaspora.
Contestants must be at least 18 years old at the time of submission.
Current officials of ANA are not eligible to participate.
Submissions must be original short stories of the entrants that have not been published before and must remain unpublished as ANA Abuja is going to publish them.
The entry must be in English, and if originally composed in any other language, including Nigeria's indigenous languages, an English translation must be provided.
*Entry Rules*
Each participant is allowed to submit only one short story in a fortnight.
The short story must be the original work of the entrant.
It must be and remain unpublished.
The short story can be written on any topic.
*The entry must not exceed 3000 words.*
The format to adhere to is Times New Roman, 12 point font.
Submissions should be sent as a word document to the ANA Abuja platform.
Each submission will come with the author's name and phone number.
It will bear at the end: Submission for ANA Fortnightly Short Story Contest.
Any entry that deviates from any of these rules will be disqualified.

Submissions for this fortnight are open from Wednesday, 3rd April, 2024 - Wednesday, 10th April, 2024.

7 years ago, A singer, songwriter and Motown legend, Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his father, a day before his birthday.
On April 1, 1984, Marvin was fatally shot
by his father in their Los Angeles home.
On the day of the murder, Marvin and
Marvin Sr were arguing about a misplaced insurance policy document. At this point, the relationship between Marvin and his father was as heated as ever- Marvin's sister had moved out of the house just toavoid the conflict.
In the months prior to his death, Marvin's family reported that he was depressed and suicidal, and had even tried to jump out of a moving car. After an alleged assassination attempt, Marvin became increasingly paranoid, so on Christmas of 1983, he gave his father a pistol to protect him from potential robbers and murderers. Marvin couldn't possibly have known that the gun he purchased to protect his family would end up becoming his own murder weapon.
As Marvin and his father fought for hours about the missing document, the
altercation became physical when Marvin
kicked his father, according to testimony
from his mother, who was a witness.
Shortly after this, Marvin, Sr took the
pistol that his son gave him and shot him in the chest.
The bullet hit his right lung,
heart, diaphragm, liver, stomach, and left
kidney. The first shot was fatal, but
Marvin, Sr moved closer and shot him
again. The house broke out in mayhem as members of the family screamed in terror.
Gaye was pronounced dead at the
hospital, the day before his 45th birthday.
Gaye's father stated that he killed his son in self-defense, did not know if the gun was loaded, and even said, "I didn't mean to do it." Marvin, Sr pleaded no contest to a voluntary manslaughter charge and was given a six year suspended sentence with five years of probation.
SYNW COMMENDS PAWA, DR. WALE OKEDIRAN FOR HOSTING WORLD ORGANISATION OF WRITERS CONGRESS
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has extended its congratulations to Dr. Wale Okediran, Secretary General of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA), for the triumphant hosting of the World Organization of Writers (WOW) Congress. This landmark event, which convened writers from across the globe, took place in Abuja, Nigeria, from April 4th to 6th, 2024.
In a statement released by the president of the Society, Wole Adedoyin, from Ibadan on Monday, the SYNW expressed its admiration for Dr. Wale Okediran's outstanding leadership and organizational prowess in orchestrating such a significant gathering.
Held in the vibrant city of Abuja, the WOW Congress served as a testimony to Dr. Okediran's dedication to fostering international literary dialogue and collaboration. This momentous event brought together writers from across the globe, solidifying its place in history.
Dr. Wale Okediran's track record of promoting literary exchange extends beyond the WOW Congress. Notably, he played a pivotal role in organizing the International Writers Conference at the University of Ibadan from June 24 to 26, 2022.
This conference, which attracted luminaries from various fields including writers, academicians, scholars, statesmen, and diplomats, showcased Dr. Okediran's commitment to creating platforms for intellectual discourse and cultural exchange.
The 2022 Writers Conference facilitated dialogue and networking among writers from over 40 African countries and the African diaspora. Representatives from Ghana, Congo Kinshasa, Togo, Nigeria, and numerous other nations converged in Abuja to celebrate the richness and diversity of global literature.
One of the remarkable aspects of the WOW Congress was its hybrid format, allowing participants to engage both physically and virtually. This innovative approach ensured inclusivity and accessibility, enabling writers from around the world to participate and contribute to the discourse on a global scale.
Throughout the Congress, participants engaged in stimulating discussions, shared insights, and forged connections that will undoubtedly shape the future of literature. Dr. Wale Okediran's visionary leadership was instrumental in creating a conducive environment for such fruitful exchanges to take place.
The SYNW commended Dr. Wale Okediran for his tireless dedication to advancing the cause of literature on a global stage. His passion for fostering cross-cultural understanding and collaboration serves as an inspiration to writers everywhere.
SELL YOUR HOARDED DOLLARS AND COUNT YOUR LOSSES BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE
The USD is on the downward trends, may reach unexpected low before June as petroleum marketers started lifting AGO (Diesel) from Dangote refinery earlier this week. PMS lifting to commence in May. This will further crash the USD.
The reason being that large percentage of the importers sourcing the USD are petroleum products importers, now that they pay in Naira for lifting from Dangote refinery, there will be a less pressure on the USD and dollar will be more available to other importers who do not need as much dollars as petroleum products importers.
The CBN has also tightened the noose on the banks. Nobody can get the USD without actually needing it. You submit your three years tax certificates, international passport, visa, oversea's vendor's account number (in which the bank will help you pay as you will not be given any physical dollar), proforma and any other document as may be required by your bank.
Similarly, your bank will have to apply to the CBN portal on your behalf, and upon qualifying for the application, your bank will pay the said amount into your oversea's vendor's account. There is no room for hoarding of the USD which will in turn cause unnecessary artificial scarcity in the market.
As an importer sourcing dollars from the bank, you are only entitled to 20 percent of the total sum needed, and note that this will not be given to you in cash either. It will be paid into your dollar card which you can only spend outside the country when you travel abroad for your importation activities. You don't have any business spending dollars in Nigeria.
The same thing goes for those who patronise the bereaux de change, before you can get the USD from the aboki, you must definitely need it outside the shore of Nigeria. There is no longer undocumented transactions. You have to submit your NIN and BNV. If you are going to study abroad and you want to pay your school fees, you must submit a copy of your admission letter, school invoice and account number. Then the aboki will help you pay.
No longer undocumented transactions, and you cannot collect it from the aboki, let alone hoarding it. Just like an importer, you as a student are also entitled to 20 percent of the total amount. You may need some money outside the school fees, like accommodation, transportation and some other miscellanies. Don't forget that aboki will not give you this 20 percent in cash, it will be paid into a designated facility designed by the CBN.
You may think you can buy your way and play the game but I doubt it, because no aboki will want to toy with his business. As a matter of fact, they all now register with 250k for one state operation and 500 million Naira deposit. For an aboki that wants to operate nationwide, they have to register with 500k and deposit 2 billion Naira. You heard me right, 2 billion Naira. And any infraction may make them lose their deposit.
No aboki will even favour you at the expense if his business because the CBN is now giving them 20,000 dollars per week to trade with and they will pay the Naira equivalent to the CBN. Though, they have not reached the target, they can only get 10k USD for now, and as more dollars are available, they can get the 20k USD as promised.
I don't think any aboki will want to play any dirty game to lose this opportunity, because henceforth, they have to account for how the USD given to them the previous week was used with documents to back it up before they can qualify for another allocation. And you think with all these stringes attached, an aboki will want to favour you as a customer to lose his business? Not even a politician can make him play the ball. For your information, about 4173 abokis were deregistered, and licenses withdrawn. We are only left with manageable 1500 plus. Any uncomplied aboki will be deregistered with the speed of light.
In a long while, this month of March was the only month the federal allocation would be shared without dollar going up. Instead, it nosedived. I trust our super corrupt governor's before these policies, they would have converted their state allocations to dollars, weakened our Naira and strengthened the dollars. Awon unpatriotic mofos. Another shocker is that commercial banks cannot hoard dollars again. They are given a threshold to maintain and any excess should be sold to their customers.
This also includes the profits they make on the dollar transactions that used to be shared by the shareholders before now. Any profit from the dollar transactions should be reinjected into their dollar business and when the threshold is reached, they should sell the spillovers. Is God not wonderful? Our almighty banks, abokis and super governors are all caged with one stroke of policies. Nigeria is on the right track and we are going to get it right.

Gradually, the days for Ibadan Books and Arts Show are getting nigh. With Prof. Olakunbi Olasope, a powerful classicist of international repute as IBASHOW 2024 Ambassador, the coast is very clear for the show.
